Detectives Investigate Police After Allegedly Assaulting Woman

Detectives are investigating an incident where a Kericho County senatorial aspirant, Ms Quenas Chepkemoi, was harassed by a police officer on the campaign trail. It is reported that the incident took place at Royal Hotel in Kericho, where Chepkemoi’s campaign posters pasted one her vehicle were pulled down by the police officer.
Through a tweet sent on Sunday, Inspector General (IG) of Police Hillary Mutyambai, condemned the act, saying that harassment towards women in the electioneering period shall not be tolerated.
“The National Police Service (NPS) regrets the incident, especially targeting a female aspirant. We wish to reiterate our highest assurances for the security of all aspirants, and more specifically female candidates,” he stated.
“No acts of hooliganism and intolerance directed against the vulnerable groups, including female, youth and persons with disability shall be tolerated from any quarters, including from those in law enforcement,” Mutyambai added.

While noting that the case has been picked up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the IG further directed all police officers to be professional as they provide security during the campaign season.
“NPS has also put in place adequate mechanisms to address all forms of harassment including Sexual and Gender-Based Violence against female aspirants, including those in vulnerable groups,” stated Mutyambai.
